Field Trip-Wildwood Park

1. Walking to Wildwood Park with the class through downtown Saratoga. Wildwood has some wonderful opportunities for photography. Each member of the class will be expected to upload:

  • Water-high shutter for freezing a moment in time
  • Water-low shutter for blurring running/flowing water over rocks
  • Examples of balance (formal, informal, tonal, color, size, shape, pattern)
Upload 3 best here

August 29th:
  1. Download a problem photo and work with Mrs. Leather using Photoshop to enhance/improve the photo.
  2. Please visit this link to understand how leading lines can be used in photographic composition
  3. Scout 3 locations for leading lines on campus. Find the locations, make a note for shooting next week. Set up a shot sheet online that includes:
    • Location
    • Lighting Conditions
    • Time of day
    • Shadows (if any)
    • Reflections (if any)
    • Potential good exposure settings (Triad of shutter/aperture/iso)
Finalize your shot sheet using google docs. Share with Mrs. Leather.  You will shoot these photos next Tuesday during class.

More about balance

Read the following article about balance, specifically symmetry vs. asymmetry in balance.

In groups discuss other ways that a photographer can introduce balance into their work. Find examples of 3 excellent photos in your groups that demonstrate different concepts related to balance. When you have found your images, leave them open and visible on your monitor. As a class you will then visit each others rows and monitors and see different examples of balance.

In groups answer, 'how can exposure impact balance'? Be ready to share out your ideas.

Week of August 25th:

Composition-

Balance: Formal, Symmetrical, Assymetrical

Dominance and focal point

Classwork:

After reading the article, look at the following photographs and describe their composition using terms relating to balance. Refer to them in your comments as the yellow building, jumping man, and men with umbrellas.

2. Now, look at this photo taken for a cover of a  Beatles album. In the comments below, answer how your eye travels around the photo. Specifically, describe the visual hierarchy, what do you look at first and why. How does your eye move around the photo. Does you eye ever go off the photo? Is there anything that leads your eye back into the photo?

Iain S. Macmillan /1938-2006/: The Beatles, Abbey Road alboum cover, 1969

3. In a group of 2 or 3, find a photography that you believe demonstrates excellent composition. Post the photo in the comments area and describe the composition by explaining how your eye travels, what do you see first, how does your eye move around the photo, is there anything that takes your eye off of the photo?
