Avedon Documentary and Socratic Groups

Homework, Due: March 9th, 8pm. Point Value: 50pts (includes the best 3 plus evidence of your many photos shot over the weekend)

Take a series of photographs over the weekend that 'tell a story'.  Have fun, find interesting people, groups, situations, or stage something with a group of friends and use photography to tell a story. Think of freezing a moment in time from a story. In order to get one good shot, be a photographer all weekend  long. Take your camera with you where you go. When an opportunity comes up, get the camera in hand and capture the stories before you. Shoot many photos, select the best 3 and upload them.

Please upload your best 3 photos to this folder, Stories, under the homework folder.

Tips:
Shoot higher resolution. Think about your composition and exposure. Get involved, move, be active and take part in the experience.

Please respond to this blogspot reflection:

Look at the work turned in from Thursday's action shots. We will analyze the work in terms of camera mastery, composition and communication. Please explain which shot you would choose as examples of
  1. Best Mastery of Camera Technology/Technique
  2. Best Composition
  3. Best Communication
Follow up by writing 1 paragraph about your experience on Thursday making action shots. Was it fun? Was it embarrassing? Was it easier the more you did it? If you did it again, how might you prepare differently?

Click here to download the Avedon learning guide which includes insights into
  1. Why we want to learn about Avedon
  2. How it can help our own work
  3. How the Socratic Process will work
  4. How we will use documentary as a learning tool
Schedule:
  • Monday-review/critique action shots, reflect upon the process and Avedon
  • Tuesday-break into groups and watch the documentary parts in groups (1 computer per)
  • Thursday, Monday, Tues-socratics run by groups. Socratics will use documentary rather than books to form foundation of learning. Each group will prepare a Socratic Seminar that will explore their Documentary Part (2-9) by creating and posing questions, running the seminar and making sure the learning is relevant to improving our own work.

Socratic Groups:
Each group will watch their assigned part of the documentary Darkness and Light. You will distill what you think is most important for the class and create questions that will engage the class in discussion.

When you run your Socratic, you will play the movie (approx 10 min), and prepare a discussion that will run 8-10 min in length. The purpose of each discussion is to deepen our own understanding of Photography and to apply the concepts learned from a modern American Master of Photography.

  1. Best Technology shot: Patrick's b/w shot of the sequence or motions required to jump up to the basketball hoop.

Best Composition: The shot by Patrick of taylor jumping off the wall. It uses the golden mean with the sides of the building starting the spiral with Taylor at the center.

Conversational shot: None of the photos really tell a story because they are more focused on capturing action. If anything tells a story, it's one of the ones with the people dancing.

  2. I think Nina's first picture is very good. The camera catches a good angle, and is uses black and white. The picture is light, which give a happy feeling. while the character in the picture is dark, to make them significant.
The picture is using a good angle that the two characters looks like holding hands, and the ground is little leaning.

  3. Composition: Locker photo by Allison
    Communication: Rahul Running by Patrick
Camera Mastery: Double Taylor by Tomas
Unfortunately I wasn't there to take the shots or experience it :(

  4. Composition: Tomasjump1
    Communication:NinaJumping4
    Camara Mastery:patrick-rahul dunks

The project was really a lot of fun but i believe it would be better to give us more time and space to be able to get more comfortable and creative with the assignment.

  5. Composition: Nina Jumping 2
Communication: Carolina Jumping. Action shot rrj3
    Camera mastery: Locker picture

  6. Composition: Patrick's shot of the girls jumping displays a great creation of depth within the picture from the angle he choose. In addition, the camera seems to be at an angle that creates an extra effect of depth.
Communication: The Nina Jumping 2 shot in black and white draws the focus on the girls faces creating emotion of the girls having fun jumping in the air.
Camera Mastery: I would choose Allison #3 with the spot coloring, clarity, action and emotion.

  7. It is really hard to pick the best of the categories because all of the works are done very well in their own way. I have to say the best in Mastery of Camera Technology/Technique would be Allison's 3rd picture with the locker. This is because the timing and lighting are very nice and that everything else is black and white except for the person which makes the subject pop. Not to mention that it is a very well done levitation photo. The Best in Composition would have to be Corinne's proportion shot mainly for it's subjects. Each subject is placed on one of the rule of thirds line, not to mention the seem of interaction between the subjects. The best in Communication would probably be Erin's first picture. It creates a feeling if excitement and happiness, and quite frankly it is pretty cute.

  8. Composition: Locker photo
    Communication: Rahul running
    Camer mastery: Tomas double Taylor

I think it was fun, but it would have been more fun with more people. Like if we were photographing another class so we all had equal opportunity to take pictures. I think with more practice it would become easier. If we were to do it differently I think it would be helpful to have a longer amount of time and be able to take pictures of more people.

  9. I think one of the best pictures taken based on the camera mastery or technique is the photo by Allison, of a girl jumping at the same time of opening a locker. It looks very authentic and natural and seems as it is a picture of an action which students do in everyday life, but in this picture it is changed and kind of inspires you to look at things from a different perspective and do things in different ways everyday. The photograph that reveals a strong sense of communication is the photo by Erin, showing a group of teens skipping all together giving the viewer a feeling on the importance of communication with friends and the impact of company on a person. The photograph with really good composition is the one by Nina, of the 3 girls jumping at the same time, because it is really well composed and contains a really good scale.

  10. Composition: Andrew
    Communication: Andrew
    Camera Mastery: Andrew

I like the shots of Andrew. They are well made.

  11. For camera mastery: Nina's picture of erin and Caitlin jumping. the reason is that there are no blurry points.
Composition: the picture of carolina jumping with the background in black and white
Communication: Allison's photo by the lockers
I liked that we did it as a whole class, however smaller groups may have been more productive and we would have more of a surprise when we looked at other people's photos. My camera also was full on photos at the end so i didn't get a ton of good photos.

  12. I think the one photo that Carolina shot is the best composition, the three people jumping one, the angle in the photo is really good, it brings the distance depth in the photo. The best communication for me is the group photo that Andrew took, it shows the good communication between background and the people in the photo.

  13. Composition. Allison Pencil Jump
    Communication. Patricks picture of Rahul
Camera Mastery. Tomas of me jumping off the wall.

  14. I felt that Nina's photo with Taylor bouncing off the wall had the best composition because my eyes followed Taylor's motion and settled on Taylor's final position in the air.
I felt that the photo of Nina (actionshot_rrj1) communicated passion for dancing very effectively so I thought it conveyed the most meaning.
Also, I feel that Allison's photo of Caitlin levitating by the locker demonstrated camera mastery because it truly appears like Caitlin is levitating instead of jumping. The picture is also very clear.

  15. Compositionally speaking, i think that Allison's photos are the best. the way she used the spot coloring made all the photos alot more interesting. I think Tomas photo of taylor with the rockets was the best because it really communicated funny and comedy because it was the funniest picture. Allison also had the best camera mastery because her jumps look the most technical and really shows the levitation style.

  16. Best communication would be allison's picture with the locker because it shows the same idea on levitation and everyone else was just trying to capture the shot in action and IK feel like she actually thought about what we learned before and tried to repeat it.
Best composition is the picture of carolina jumping and she is in color and the background is in black and white. It was taken nicely and it really draws my eye to carolina.
Best camera mastery is Nina's picture of me and Caitlin jumping it was at a really cool angle and thought it was shot well

  17. 1. I think the picture of Rahul jumping up to the basket has really good camera technique...the multiple exposure froze each of his positions really nicely, it's very clear and evenly spaced, and since the background is rather light, my focus shifts to Rahul...especially as he is reaching out to the basket, which is really nice
    2. I think Tomas' picture of Taylor jumping and with the multiple exposure has really good composition. Taylor is centered, but my eye follows his path as if I'm in the action.
    3. I think the black and white shot of Nina had the best communication, partly because of her dancing form and partly because of her expression.
I enjoyed taking action shots and it got easier as we took more...
