Homework Reflection-Sept 9th

Reflect on your work based on the concepts below and suggest a grade (out of 10 possible points)

  1. Was this work completed over the weekend as assigned, or did you upload something from the classwork from Thursday. Remember, the purpose of the classwork is to learn and practice the concept, the weekend work is to perfect the process or learn more about the concept. You may not fully succeed, but not trying the concept on the weekend will not further your understanding and practice of photography. (and from a grading standpoint-it's a 0)
  2. Was the object moving at a rate fast enough to track?
  3. Did you track the object at the rate of its speed?
  4. Did you keep your arms tucked close to you and track with a movement of your waist to reduce as much camera shake?
  5. Are you shooting in a normal to lower light setting? Remember, shooting a noon in the bright sun caused problems. So we discussed not shooting in the brightest part of the day with sun beaming down straight overhead.
  6. Do you believe your shutter speed was low enough, such as 1/30th-1/60th or thereabouts?
  7. If in manual mode, did you adjust your Aperture and ISO to reduce light if necessary, or are your photos overexposed?
  8. Is it a good subject for a panning shot?
  9. Did you think about where you were standing relative to the moving subject you were shooting and did you plan your shot in terms of framing? (How close were you to the subject, how did you frame your shot?)
  10. Did you try to perfect the process over the weekend at least for an hour?

      1. i think, out of ten, i deserve a 9. I followed almost all of the necessary protocol and produced a good shot. the one thing I forgot was to hold my arms by my side.

    4. 1. yes i took pictures over the weekend at my house
      2. yes especially the water polo ball my dad threw and the car went by fast enough
      3.yes.
      4.yes
      5. I did shoot around 2 pm so it was bright outside
      6.yes
      7. yes my Aperture was a little higher then you suggest because of the time of day
8.I thought the car that i took was a better panning shot but the water polo ball worked well too
      9. yes i was to the side of the subject and I wanted to be close enough to the car but not to close so you can still see the background
      10. yes

    5. 1.My uploaded photos were completed over the weekend.
2.The object (person), was moving fairly fast, but i think it may not have been fast enough and thats why i had some difficulty.
3.i tracked the object at the speed it was moving, but i think it should have been faster. But for the most part i think i came close to succeeding
      4. Yes, i tired to.
      5. Yes, i tried shooting later on in the day, when it was still light but not nearly as bright.
      6. yes i had my shutter speed at 1/30th
      7. i adjusted my aperture, to reduce the extra light.
      8. I thought it came out cool, but because i used a person who wasn't running at full speed, it may not have been fast enough.
      9. I did it many times, from different angles and changing the distance between me and the subject until i found a place i liked and then i continued working from there.
      10. I think in total i worked for about an hour, until i found a shot i liked.
I think i deserve a 10/10 i attempted to perfect the idea of panning, and worked at it for an hour. Although i think there are things that could be improved in the image i think i put a lot of effort into it.

    6. The work I submitted was completed on Thursday, but I did try to perfect it over the weekend (I wasn't satisfied with any of it, which is why I just uploaded the stuff from class). The objects were moving pretty fast, and I did try to match the speed. I have tried to stabilize it using only waist movement, but without looking through the lens it was hard to get a good angle; for me, it was either a clear image/blurry background with a bad position (i.e. half of it is cut off) or good position but bad focus. Trying to do the photos when it started to get darker produced much better results; however, getting a good balance between low shutter speed and letting in a good amount of light was pretty difficult. A lot of the photos taken during the day were overexposed, and those taken later were a bit dark. In general, I think cars are a much better subject for a good panning shot, but sports and stuff like that seem like they would be good in the hands of an experienced photographer. Most of the time, I was pretty close to the subject, although I did try a few from farther away; this seemed to create blurrier shots but a greater sense of motion. I spent a lot of time trying to get good shots over the weekend, but did not end up happy with any of them. -8/10

    7. 1. Yes I did this on sunday at my church
      2. yes, she was going down a slide, it wasn't very fast so i had to turn the shutter speed down further
      3.yes
      4. yes
      5. yes, it was in a shaded playground
      6. yes, as soon as I got some good ones, the shutter speed was low enough
      7. i adjusted my ISO and Aperture as needed because there was more light in different parts of the playground
      8. It was a little tough because they weren't running around as they normally do, the slide photos were the ones that turned out the best.
      9. yes, i zoomed in as necessary and stood back as necessary.
      10. I was on the playground for about 30mins and then my camera stopped working so I tried to fix it for another 30mins but nothing i did worked.... it wouldn't take pictures for some reason. but i did get a few where the background was blurry and the kid was focused.

      1. I think I deserve a 8 out of ten because I got some okay pictures but the subject was off-centered and the background wasn't that blurry.

      6)No
      7)Yes, I don't think they're too over exposed.
8)I don't think its a bad subject for a panning shot.
9)Yes, I was standing next to it but in front so I had enough time to get the movement.
      10) I did the best I could.

      1. I think I deserve a 7/10 because I don't think in my opinion I didn't get the best shot I could, I don't think all my settings were correct. Also, I did not have my picture in on time due to a computer issue.

    9. ☮1.I did shoot a lot over the weekend, i tried to take pictures of the players during the football game on friday, but i wasn't able to get any good pictures. Sunday i went to Berkeley and i shoot cars from a hill, and i was able to take better pictures. I used one of the pictures i shoot friday, because i think its a wonderful picture, and i used another one that i took sunday morning.
☮2. The football player were not, i believe.
but the cars were going pretty fast 60-70 miles x hour.
      ☮3. Yes
      ☮4. Yes
☮5. During the game the light was good i believe, because the lights of the field were very bright, but my pictures were not good.
sunday morning was bright, but there was also a lot of shade, so i think that helped a lot.
      ☮6. Yes
☮7. Yes, and i don't believe that my photos are overexposed
      ☮8. Yes
      ☮9. Yes
☮10. Yes and probably more than an hour
      -Saratoga Football game
      -Berkeley Hills.

    10. 1. The photo was completed over the weekend.
      2. Yes, the object was moving fast enough.
      3. Yes, I did try to track the object.
      4. Yes, The camera was as close to my body as possible.
      5. The photo was taken in my room, which has a good amount of light; although it was not natural light, my lamp did a good job of providing soft lighting.
      6. Yes, my shutter speed was low enough to blur the background while enough to not catch any shake in my hands.
      7. There wasn't sufficient light in my room, so I turned the ISO up. Aperture was kept as low as possible in order to let in more light as well.
      8. I took a more liberal take on the shot as I used something that would be usually a still shot as a moving object. What I found neat was how the text on the cap reads "knockSTEADY".
      9. The subject was only an arms distance away, as I turned my body to compose the shot. With a locked elbow, I could reduce shake.
      10. I tried the shot many times, because I wanted the background to be well composed, and it was difficult due to the fast motion. For me, because I knew how to create the effects of the shot, I did my best to perfect how close the zoom was to the cap, as well as how its placed in relation to the background.

      I'd give myself a 9.5/10

    11. 1. I completed this homework over the weekend, but it didn't really work out as well.
      2. The first picture is, but the second picture was not quite fast enough.
      3. I tried to, for the first picture I might have been a little slow, but for the second picture the object just wasn't moving fast enough.
      4. no
      5. The first photo was taken at night and there was glare from the lights from the football field, the other picture was late afternoon and in a kind of shady area so there was not too much of a light problem.
      6. I cannot change my shutter speed.
      7. To take these pictures I have to be in auto mode.
      8. A frisbee I admit is a little harder to do, but I was trying to get people who are really know how to control a frisbee. The first shot was a frisbee thrown by a person on the Ultimate Frisbee team, the second was just thrown by my friend. I really depends who's throwing the frisbee, a Ultimate Frisbee or Frisbee Golf player could create a better panning moment than someone who is just told to throw it.
      9. The first picture I was too far away from the frisbee, though it was flying away from me, for the second picture I made sure to be closer, but I couldn't really get a decent shot. I should have been in a good position to get a decent shot though.
      10. I was trying really hard to get panning to work, walking home I tried to get pictures of moving cars all turning out fruitless. It's because you have to be moving before to take the shot as well as during the shot, so I need more space to move.

I think I deserve a 5 for giving an effort, but still not being able to get the concept right and for posting a picture that was attempt, though it didn't seem like it.

    12. 1- one of the pictures of my homework was taken on the weekend however the other photo was taken during school class since i thought it was very effective and showed the technique we are working on very well, panning.
2- my brother was running fast enough at a fast rate to track the picture however this technique is still very hard and i think it requires a lot of practice. I did manage to get 2 pictures that show effective panning however after taking many pictures trying to get this effect on the photo.
3- I did track the object at the rate of its speed by moving the camera at about the same speed that my brother's or the car's speed, however it is hard to manage and find out where to focus and shoot in order to get the effect.
4- i did try to keep your arms tucked close to my upper body and track with the movement of my waist to reduce as much camera shake.
5- During the shoot the sun was very bright which made me reduce iso amount for the camera.
      6- yes
      7-yes
      8- yes
      9- yes
10- yes i did, at 2 different locations, one at the front side of my house and the other one at los gatos :)
#8/#!0 since I put a lot of passion however i need more practice in order to get better pictures with a good panning effect.

    13. I took a picture of a soccer ball and my brother running this past weekend. They were both moving fast enough so that my camera would create a blur, and I did my best to follow them both at their rate of speed, and to capture them in the center of my photo. I started shooting around 5:30, so it wasn't the brightest part of the day, but I still had to adjust the ISO down to its lowest setting. I used about 1/80 for my shutter speed and the lowest aperture possible. My brother was not the best subject for panning since he got tired of running rather quickly, but she showed up better than the other subjects I tried to shoot, like a paper airplane and some crows. I think that I should get a 10 because I spent 45 minutes shooting a variety of subjects and experimenting with different camera settings.

    14. 1. The work that I turned in was from the weekend.
      2. yes, the object was close enough to track.
      3. yes, I tracked the object with its speed.
      4. no, i didn't keep my arms tucked.
      5. yes, I shot at 5 pm
      6. yes, it was low enough, it was mainly 1/30th
      7. yes, I kept adjusting it until I got a good aperture and iso to fit what I was shooting
      8. yes, the cars were a pretty good object to be shooting.
      9. yes, I was pretty close to the object that I was shooting.
      10. yes, I spent about an hour taking pictures
I think I deserve a 8.5/10 because even though I didn't perfect it correctly, mainly because I wasn't here on Thursday but I tried my hardest to learn how to do panning for pictures. I also took all of my pictures over the weekend.

    17. I took the photos over the weekend. I went to play the badminton on Sunday, so i took the photo of throwing the badminton. It is really hard to get it, because the speed of the badminton is so fast, and the parabola is not straight, it is really hard to keep the arms not shaking. But after I took it a while, I kind of know what is the speed of the badminton trowing, and I got some photo that is really work with this panning shot. I put my shutter speed on 1/40, it works really good with that. I think badminton is not really a good subject for a panning shot, because it is really hard to took it. I think it is really important that where did you stand when you shooting, because when you shooting the moving thing it is really hard to get it in the photo. I use about one hour to take the photo, i took about 100 photos to get those photos I upload. I think I can get eight points in these photos.

    18. 1. The photo that I used was taken in class, however, I had to borrow Andrew's camera to do it. I do not believe that the camera I am using has a shutter speed control. It only allows ISO to be changed, therefore, I couldn't really do any work over the weekend. I have ordered a new camera from amazon however and it should be coming soon.
      2. The two subjects were moving fast enough.
      3. Yes, it was tracked at near its rate of speed.
      4. Yes, I tucked my arms in when shooting the picture.
      5. I used lower light settings.
      6. I used about 1/30th of a second
      7. The ISO was low. Around 200 ISO.
      8. The car and Andrew were good subjects for the photograph.
      9. The shot was planned out, and the car did end up on a third line and was blurred okay. However, the car wasn't totally in focus. It was about 20-30 feet away when the photo was taken.
      10. I couldn't. My camera lacks shutter and aperture settings. It only has ISO settings.
      10.

    19. Jimmy,
In about 90 seconds I found a link that demonstrates how to pan with your cam.

      http://www.sony.co.uk/hub/learnandenjoy/6

I think with some research you can find that your camera can do some things we are looking at in class. Your camera should not stop you from trying.
